The Anesthesia Section provides high quality anesthesia service to the Large and Small Animal Hospitals for routine, stable patients as well as critical and emergency patients. In addition, this section creates a positive learning experience for TUSVM students and house staff with regard to small and large animal anesthesia, and supports the training of specialized anesthesia technicians.

The Senior Veterinary Technician (SVT) is responsible for assisting the Hospital Administration and Anesthesia Section Head in directing the daily function and smooth operation of the Small and Large Animal Anesthesia section. The SVT is responsible for supervision of the section’s technicians. This includes monitoring performance and coaching for success, handling performance issues and setting the standard for quality technical assistance and professionalism. This position ensures that high quality technical assistance will be provided to all patients presented to the service for anesthesia care as well as providing and ensuring excellent customer service to clinicians, residents, interns, staff and students. Technical duties include caring for stable, routine patients as well as critical and emergent patients, teaching and assisting veterinary students in correct technical procedures, ensuring that support staff stay abreast of new techniques and are capable of effectively training veterinary students, and the promotion of quality service to all of anesthesia’s customers. Administrative duties include coordination and scheduling of technical staff to meet the needs of the service concerning routine, critical, and emergency cases in both the small and large animal hospitals. This position recommends changes and makes proposals for cost-saving improvements which will enhance the production and operation of the Anesthesia service. This position will promote, facilitate, and develop a team spirit and professional, productive workforce among the Anesthesia technicians. This position requires frequent, clear communication with the Veterinary Technician Manager and the Anesthesia Section Head.

Basic Requirements: Graduate of accredited veterinary technology program or degree in related field with minimum 3 years experience as a Certified Veterinary Technician and prior supervisory experience. CVT. Familiarity with Word, Excel, Power Point, Hospital accounting system, electronic medical record and time clock system. Ability to lift 50 lbs with or without accommodation. Flexibility with schedule required.  

Preferred qualifications include 3+ years of related experience, previous experience in a veterinary teaching hospital and human resource management skills. Prior experience in a supervisory role. Strong work ethic. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills. Advanced technical ability and strong knowledge of anesthesia. Prior experience in a clinical setting. VTS (Anesthesia) certification or certification eligible.
