The MSPCA Shelter Veterinarian provides veterinary medical and surgical services to the MSPCA Boston shelter (and outlying shelters as needed). The Shelter Veterinarian is responsible for initiating and overseeing appropriate disease prevention, control and eradication programs for the shelter population. Other responsibilities include performing routine health screenings/wellness examinations on animals surrendered to the shelter and determining the recommended individual animal treatment protocols. The Shelter Veterinarian also performs spay and neuter surgeries for MSPCA shelter, and performs post-adoption follow-up exams for health issues identified during peri-adoptive period. The Shelter Veterinarian acts as a liaison on behalf of the shelter in maintaining positive and productive relationships with the Angell Animal Medical Center hospital staff, the law enforcement department, and local veterinarians.
Education requirements for this position are a graduate of an accredited veterinary school and licensed to practice veterinary medicine in the state of Massachusetts. This is a full time position 40 hours a week, however we are also willing to consider two part time veterinarians. Salem Animal Rescue League (SARL) • Shelter Veterinarian (SV) Job Description
The SARL shelter veterinarian will work in collaboration with the Executive Director (ED), staff and volunteers to provide shelter medicine, surgery, treatment and care for SARL shelter animals and the animals of selected collaborative groups at the discretion of the ED.
The shelter veterinarian’s responsibilities will include, however, not be limited to the following:
* Intake vetting for all SARL shelter animals including health certificates for all transport dogs.
* Provide early spay/neuter of kittens and puppies.
* Provide spay/neuter of all cats and dogs up to a comfortable weight limit.
* Emergency care for shelter animals when the SV is on site or on call.
* Provide routine surgeries to SARL animals.
* Provide Dentals once a location is determined.
* Provide shelter medicine and minor surgeries to approved collaborative groups.
* The SV will oversee all vetting procedures and management of staff and volunteer veterinarian technicians.
* Purchase medicine, drugs, and supplies for an adequate inventory. An accounting for incoming and distribution of inventory will be the responsibility of the SV.
* All shelter animals will be monitored by the SV on a daily basis by conducting a walk through and visual exam of each animal. Upon completion of the veterinarian’s walk through the SV will instruct staff and volunteers on daily animal care for all shelter animals.
* SV with the assistance of the ED will provide vetting protocol for all incoming animals.
* SV will coordinate all specialized surgeries and consultations with outside vets.
* The SV will work 12–30 hours per week depending on the procurement of other collaborative groups (days/hours to be negotiated).
