Updates on Canine Influenza

Massachusetts’ initial encounter with canine influenza was several years ago at our greyhound race tracks. Occasional bouts of respiratory illness are not uncommon in that population of canine athletes. The inciting cause at that time was identified as an H3N8 influenza variant that had likely mutated from an equine subtype to affect dogs. The large number of dogs kenneled in close proximity to one another was a contributing factor in spreading the disease within kennels and the co-mingling that occurs during racing and training contributed to further spread from kennel to kennel.
