Early Bird: USDA - Agritourism for Veterinarians: Tools to Improve Animal & Public Health (1 CE)

 Discussion of NASPHV Compendium of Measures to Prevent Disease Associated with Animals in Public Settings, 2017

  • Awareness of public health risks related to animal health and topics for consulting with clients on animal health
  • Learn preventative measure tools and concepts being delivered to farmers

Backyard Poultry (6 CE)

Poultry medicine basics for entry-level veterinary practitioners, with an emphasis on generating a list of differential diagnosis of common infectious and non-infectious poultry diseases. ·        

  • Recognizing reportable diseases of poultry.·         
  • Troubleshooting diagnostic sample collection via learning the approaches to a comprehensive post-mortem evaluation.·         
  • Reviewing regulations regarding submissions of CVI’s or participation in National Poultry Improvement Plan.·         
  • Approaches to treatment and surgery (co-taught by an avian exotic veterinarian) of the backyard poultry patient.
  • Visiting regulations surrounding treatment and care.

Small Animal Dentistry (6 CE)

Pet dental care is one of the most commonly addressed issues in veterinary practice. However, in veterinary school, it is barely covered. This 6-hour presentation will discuss the basics new graduates and experienced veterinarians alike will need to know.

  • How to do a complete oral examination
  • Proper periodontal therapy of dogs and cats
  • Interpretation of normal and abnormal dental radiographs
  • Proper surgical extraction techniques
  • Care of dental instruments including instrument sharpening


Small Ruminants, Camelids and Pet Pigs (6 CE)
Dusty Nagy, DVM, MS, PhD

These lectures will focus on all aspects of small ruminant, camelids and pet pigs. The lectures will start with routine entry level material and progress through more advanced medical, surgical, and herd concerns.  

  • Basic husbandry including behavior, handling, and restraint. 
  • Basic procedures and protocols like foot trimming, vaccination, and deworming will also be covered.        
  • Physical examination including normal parameters and common abnormalities associated with the various systems.     
  • Use of pharmaceuticals and drug selection including the legalities of drug use in food producing animals.
  • Common medical diseases.
  • Common surgical diseases including anesthetic options and pain control.
  • Medical and surgical diseases in the context of clinical cases.
