Sarah A. Moore, DVM, DACVIM (Neurology)
Topics will include:
- “Hands off” neurology: Gait and posture hold the keys. While much of the neurologic examination is a "hands on" experiences, much can be learned about a patient's neurologic status before you ever touch them. This session will focus on how gait and posture alone can assist with neurolocalization and generating a list of differential diagnoses.
- The cranial nerve exam: Your window to the brain. The cranial nerves are a set of 12 peripheral nerves that originate from the brain. Evaluation of the cranial nerves is especially important when diseases of the brain are suspected, as they often allow for a precise neurolocalization. This session will focus on tips and tricks for successfully using your cranial nerve exam to local a lesion and determine a set of differential diagnoses
- Managing the difficult epileptic. This session focuses on treating the veterinary patient with difficult to control seizures, including discussion of when and how to add in additional medications, management options for cluster seizures, and novel anti-convulsant therapies.
- Neurologic episodes: When it’s not a seizure. Neurologic "episodes" can present a diagnostic quandary for the veterinary practitioner. Despite the line between “seizure” and “not as seizure” being portrayed as clear in the veterinary curriculum, this is not always the case in reality. This session will use a case-based approach to focus on defining neurologic episodes beyond the more typical type.
- Once seen, never forgotten: Interesting cases in medical neurology I. Neurology is full of interesting cases. This session will present a few of those, accompanied by discussion of underlying pathophysiology and treatment. It is the first hour of a two-part series.Once seen, never forgotten: Interesting cases in medical neurology II. Neurology is full of interesting cases.
