Small Animal - System Based Approach to: Coughing, Sneezing, Vomiting and Diarrhea (6 CE)

Topics will include:

 

Dr. Stone will review four common presenting clinical complaints and discuss important diagnostic and treatment issues for each, highlighting key points to remember and some new concepts to consider.

  • Cough of Unknown Origin
  • Sneezes and Snuffles
  • Vomiting, A Rational Approach
  • Canine and Feline Diarrhea

 

 

Cannabinoids and Legal Issues in Massachusetts (6 CE)

Casara Andre, DVM,cVMA and Hannah Belcher-Timme, DVM

 

Topics will include:
  • The endocannabinoid system (ECS), its anatomy and function in mammals, and how this system affects our practice of clinical veterinary medicine.
  • The science of the Cannabis plant and how medical molecules produced from the plant may modulate the ECS, including a review of important terminology and research into future potential therapeutic uses for cannabis products.
  • The legal and ethical landscape of the current veterinary cannabis industry for the veterinary practitioner, including a discussion of recommended precautions and medical record keeping.
  • The core role of harm-reduction education (HRE) for our clients and our clinic teams, including a discussion of how to evaluate cannabis products for safety, a review of currently available formulations and the need for clinical caution in considering their use.
  • Cannabis use in seizure and pain control, behavior disorders, and oncology – by drawing on both human and animal research – using a case-based format and with a focus on the mechanisms by which the ECS interacts with other major body systems.
  • Cannabis administration guidelines and monitoring protocols.

 

Practical Equine Cardiology and Point of Care Ultrasonography

Topics will include:

  • Cardiac Auscultation: Differentiating significant murmurs and arrhythmias - Will play common murmurs and arrhythmias and discuss tools for practitioners to differentiate the ones that are clinically important.
  • Prepurchase and Insurance Examinations Will discuss clinically important cardiac conditions and their impact in prepurchase and insurance examinations.
  • Equine Sudden Cardiac Death (SCD) - Will discuss how to recognize conditions that could place horse and rider and risk for sudden cardiac death.
  • Cardiac Disease and Performance - When is the heart the limiting factor in performance or a contributing factor to poor performance
  • Medications and Their Impact on the Heart in Horses - Will discuss the impact of some commonly administered medications and their effect on the heart and the treatment of horses with cardiac disease.
  • Point of Care (POC) Ultrasound - POC ultrasound is making good quality ultrasound available for a fraction of the cost of a high end hospital machine and connects with a tablet or smart phone, making it a financially viable solution for many practitioners who heretofore, could not afford an ultrasound machine.
