In this session, we will briefly review the basics of pathophysiology and by extension, a logical algorithm using physical exam findings combined with serum and urine biochemical data to diagnose and categorize renal disease into a few basic categories with specific implications for management and diagnosis. We will also review renal disease “mimics” that may share clinical and laboratory features, but require different diagnostic and therapeutic approaches. We will review heavily on active case review and data interpretation to illustrate concepts and reinforce utilization of some practical interpretive algorithms to help you efficiently and confidently diagnose patients presenting with azotemia and inadequate urine specific gravity. This presentation works as a stand alone session, however for interested clinicians, it will build on future sessions that will delve in more detail into electrolytes and acid/base interpretation and diagnostic enzymology.
