What does the changing landscape for accessible veterinary care mean for general practice?

The veterinary oath requires us to use our skills and abilities for the betterment of society and the protection of animal health and welfare regardless of the animals’ circumstances. For veterinarians confronting the daily economic realities of private practice and/or any veterinarian who wants to practice high quality medicine, it can be difficult to understand how to balance owner limitations with the desire to provide care. The growing field of accessible veterinary care recognizes that for our profession to meet the professional obligations to provide care for all companion animals the industry needs to change. These changes involve rethinking the way care is delivered and developing new models for care. For veterinarians in practice who want to expand services to underserved clients, key strategies include offering flexible treatment plans and/or accepting alternative payment options.
