Extending the Veterinarian’s Role in Supporting Service, Therapy, and Emotional Support Animals (3 CE)
Zenithson Ng, DVM, MS, DABVP (Canine and Feline)
Original live date: August 24, 2025

Animals provide immeasurable joy to people, and for many, this bond extends beyond companionship to a prescribed necessity. Veterinarians play a vital role in fostering the human-animal bond, ensuring that working animals not only perform their duties effectively but also lead fulfilling lives. The first part of this presentation will explore the distinctions and legal classifications of service, therapy, and emotional support animals, offering insight into their daily lives and the unique demands placed upon them. Next, we will examine the veterinary team’s responsibilities in medical record-keeping, specialized health care, and handling protocols tailored to both the animal and the handler’s needs. Finally, we will address the ethical considerations surrounding these working animals, including their welfare, career longevity, and retirement planning. By understanding the challenges they face, veterinary professionals can play an essential role in safeguarding their well-being, ensuring they remain healthy, capable, and supported throughout their service and beyond.
