Topics to Include:

Equine Emergency Medicine in the Field (4 CE)
Mark Reilly, DVM, DABVP, MBA

Equine practitioners are still faced with being on call every night and determining what must be seen, or does not need to be seen based on a phone call with an attendant by the patient’s side some distance away. Emergency cases will be presented in the format of those requiring urgent care versus those that should be seen the same day. Additionally, the presentation will discuss different models of offering emergency services.
MVMA/New England VMA Member Rate: $120

Enzymology and Hepatobiliary Disease (3 CE)
Leslie Sharkey, PhD, DVM, BS, DACVP

This session will focus on the interpretation of enzyme data and indicators of hepatic clearance and synthetic function. We will present a schema that breaks things that "look like liver" into 4 non-mutually exclusive possible etiologic contributors: hepatic cell damage, cholestasis (several clinically important subcategories), synthetic/clearance failure, and not actually liver at all. The focus will be on using the qualitative and quantitative abnormalities to estimate the probabilities of different categories of underlying causes to design logical and strategically optimized further diagnostic and empirical treatment plans. You'll never say "it looks like liver" again!
MVMA/New England VMA Member Rate: $90

Clinical Chemistry of Renal Disease and Diagnostic Dilemmas (3 CE)
Leslie Sharkey, PhD, DVM, BS, DACVP

In this session, we will briefly review the basics of pathophysiology and by extension, a logical algorithm using physical exam findings combined with serum and urine biochemical data to diagnose and categorize renal disease into a few basic categories with specific implications for management and diagnosis. We will also review renal disease “mimics” that may share clinical and laboratory features, but require different diagnostic and therapeutic approaches. We will review heavily on active case review and data interpretation to illustrate concepts and reinforce utilization of some practical interpretive algorithms to help you efficiently and confidently diagnose patients presenting with azotemia and inadequate urine specific gravity.
MVMA/New England VMA Member Rate: $90

Electrolytes and Acid Base Evaluation (3 CE)
Leslie Sharkey, PhD, DVM, BS, DACVP

This session will focus on the use of routinely available serum biochemical and urine dipstick data to critically assess and diagnose abnormalities in patient electrolyte and acid base status. What are the common causes of sodium, chloride and potassium abnormalities and how do I distinguish them? What follow up tests are indicated, if any? What impact can commonly used medications have on electrolyte data? How do I tell if my patient has a metabolic acid/base disorder and what is causing it? We will focus on shock, renal and gastrointestinal diseases and endocrine disorders as common causes of electrolyte and acid base disorders and when and how to distinguish them for diagnostic and therapeutic purposes.
MVMA/New England VMA Member Rate: $90

The Old and New of Upper Airway Disease (2 CE)
Mary Ann Nieves, DVM, MS, DACVS

The talk focuses on upper airway obstruction due to laryngeal paralysis, brachycephalic airway obstruction, Norwich Terrier specific airway disease, epiglottic entrapment and tracheal obstruction. Attendees will be refreshed in anatomy and etiology. Diagnosis and current treatment modalities will be discussed. Emphasis will be placed on diagnosis and treatment options and prognosis.
MVMA/New England VMA Member Rate: $60

Diabetes: Recent Advances and Current Trends (3 CE)
Orla Mahony MVB, DACVIM, DECVIM

A comprehensive overview of diabetes mellitus in dogs and cats with an emphasis on treatment and glucose monitoring. Upon completion of the session, participants should expect to feel comfortable managing stable diabetic patients and using interstitial glucose monitoring to optimize glucose control.
MVMA/New England VMA Member Rate: $90

Radiographic Interpretation of the Dyspneic Cat/Imaging the Chronic Coughing Dog (3 CE)
L. Abbigail Granger, DVM, DACVR

Radiographic interpretation of the dyspneic cat. Cats presenting for dyspnea often require rapid diagnosis combined with minimal handling. These cases can be stressful; however, a simple algorithmic approach can be used to determine the best plan of action in many instances. Attendees will learn simple ways to process limited imaging of dyspneic cats in order to limit further stress and enact a plan of treatment as soon as possible.

Imaging the chronic coughing dog. Chronic coughing can be somewhat frustrating as cardiac and respiratory diseases can both be responsible, yet treatment between the two causes differs greatly. The microanatomical causes of coughing will be reviewed and will factor into an imaging approach to diagnose causes of chronic coughing in dogs.

Tips and Tricks to Diagnosing Ortho Conditions (3 CE)
Darryl Millis, MS, DVM, DACVS, CCRP
