Randomized Clinical Study at Tufts for Feline Cardiogenic Arterial Thromboembolism
Foster Hospital for Small Animals at Tufts Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine is actively recruiting cats presenting with acute cardiogenic arterial thromboembolism (ATE) for a randomized clinical study. This collaborative study between the Cardiology and Emergency and Critical Care Services aims to investigate the potential benefits of N-acetylcysteine (NAC) as an adjunctive treatment for feline ATE.
Eligible patients include cats ≥3 years of age presenting with their first episode of bilateral hindlimb ATE, associated with cardiomyopathy and left atrial enlargement. Cats with previous ATE episodes, unilateral or forelimb involvement, or significant systemic diseases unrelated to their underlying cardiac condition are not eligible.
Enrolled cats will receive standard-of-care antithrombotic treatment, with or without adjunctive NAC, through random assignment. Limited research funding is available to help offset a portion of the costs associated with diagnostic testing and treatment.
Veterinarians encountering potential cases are encouraged to contact the Tufts Emergency and Critical Care Service as early as possible to discuss eligibility and coordinate referral, as timely evaluation and enrollment are essential. Final eligibility will be determined by the study team following evaluation at Tufts.
